The IFS-Base is the core module of the Deutsche Bundesbank’s Investment Funds Statistics (IFS). Since September 2009 the IFS allows for a detailed overview of the assets and liabilities of German open-end investment funds on a fund-by-fund level.

The German government has decided to mint a €2 commemorative coin entitled “Mecklenburg-West Pomerania” to be issued on 30 January 2024.

The Governing Council of the ECB has shortlisted the motifs for the two possible themes for future euro banknotes: “European culture: shared cultural spaces” and “Rivers and birds: resilience in diversity”. The selected motifs include Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie and Leonardo da Vinci. “Rivers and birds” included a kingfisher in a waterfall, a white stork flying over a river valley and a wallcreeper next to a mountain landscape. The ECB is expected to make the final decision on the designs of the new banknotes in 2026.

In the third quarter of 2024, German households’ financial assets grew by €197 billion, closing the quarter at a new record high of €9,004 billion. This is a continuation of the uninterrupted growth trend that has lasted since end-2023.

Overview of institutions

Seit Mitte Januar ist Andreas Retzlaff Präsident der Hauptverwaltung in Bremen, Niedersachsen und Sachsen-Anhalt. Er hat das Amt von Corina Paetsch übernommen, die nun Leiterin des Zentralbereichs Baumanagement ist. Bei der Amtswechselfeier im Februar in Hannover hob Vorstandsmitglied Burkhard Balz vor mehr als 200 Gästen die Verdienste von Paetsch in ihrer Amtszeit hervor – und zeigte sich froh darüber, dass die Bank mit Retzlaff einen hervorragenden Nachfolger gefunden habe.

Die Jahreswachstumsrate des weit gefassten Geldmengenaggregats M3 erhöhte sich im Januar 2025 auf 3,6 % nach 3,4 % im Dezember 2024. In den drei Monaten bis Januar betrug sie durchschnittlich 3,6 %. 

Germany’s current account recorded a surplus of €24.0 billion in December 2024, up €2.1 billion on the previous month’s level. The surplus in the goods account decreased sharply, but the surplus in invisible current transactions, which comprise services as well as primary and secondary income, increased more strongly.

According to the current issue of the Bundesbank’s Monthly Report, German economic output fell surprisingly significantly in the fourth quarter of 2024. The main reasons for this were declining exports and weak industrial output, especially in the automotive sector, while private and government consumption expenditure rose. The labour market outlook also suggests a continued cooldown.

As in 2023, the monetary policy measures of the past few years shaped the Bundesbank’s annual accounts in the 2024 financial year. It recorded an accumulated loss of €19.2 billion for the reporting year, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel and First Deputy Governor Sabine Mauderer said at the press conference presenting the Bank’s annual accounts. The Bundesbank has a sound balance sheet, Mr Nagel stressed, explaining that the value of its revaluation reserves was many times greater than the current and prospective accumulated losses.
