Collector euro coins
Since the introduction of euro banknotes and coins, a number of German euro collector coins in various denominations have been issued every year, which are legal tender only in Germany.
Copies of these coins in mint condition can be purchased at their nominal value at all branches of the Deutsche Bundesbank (currently excluding the Mainz branch) starting from the date of issue and only as long as stocks last. Higher-quality coins with a proof-like finish are sold by Münze Deutschland at a price above their nominal value.
The original €10 collector coins have been reissued as €20 collector coins since 2016. The reissued coins are made of a silver alloy (Ag 925) and are available in both mint condition and with a proof-like finish. They are issued with several motifs per year. Since 2021, there has been one edition each year featuring a partially coloured theme, starting with a €20 coin celebrating the popular children’s television show Die Sendung mit der Maus.
Moreover, the Federal Government made a further addition to the coin collection programme starting in 2016 by introducing an innovative €5 “Planet Earth” collector coin. This coin consists of three parts: An outer ring, an inner core and an embossable blue polymer ring inserted between the ring and the core. The blue ring is also partially translucent. The coins were produced by all five German mints in mint condition and with a proof-like finish. The trend was continued with the five-part series of innovative €5 collector coins “Climate zones of the earth” which ran from 2017 to 2021.
The €5 collector coin “Insect kingdom”, released in 2022, marked the start of a nine-part series called the “Wonderful world of insects”, which features partly coloured motifs and will be issued in four parts per year in 2023 and 2024.
Due to the great success of the €5 collector coins with coloured polymer rings, the Federal Government decided to issue a new €10 collector coin with a polymer ring. The three-part series “Air moves” started in 2019 with the first motif, “In the air”. The series was continued in 2020 with the motif “On the ground”. “On the water" marked the end of the series in 2021.
The 2022 €10 collector coin “Care” featuring a polymer ring in a colour characteristic of the profession depicted marked the start of a five-part series called “In the service of society”. It was followed by ”Fire brigade” in 2023 and “Police” in 2024, with red and blue polymer rings, respectively.
A one-off €11 collector coin was created to pay special tribute to the 2024 European Football Championship being held in Germany.
In 2015, a collector coin was minted to honour the reunification of Germany. Worth €25 (€1 for every year since reunification), the coin was minted at all five German mints in mint condition and with a proof-like finish.
The series of Christmas-themed €25 collector coins are being reissued, featuring a special minting process – plate-shaping – which gives their motifs a particularly three-dimensional look. The series began in 2021 and will continue into 2025.
The Federal Government’s coin collection programme is topped off with a series of gold euro collector coins with nominal values of €20, €50, €100 and €200. These are available exclusively from Münze Deutschland via a separate ordering procedure.
Further information as well as images and descriptions of these coins can be found on Münze Deutschland’s website.
