2025 – Federal Agency for Technical Relief €10 collectors’ coin with a blue polymer ring
The German government has decided to mint a €10 collector coin entitled “Federal Agency for Technical Relief”, which is scheduled for issue on 24 April 2025. This coin is the fourth in a series called “In the service of society”. The series brings into focus the particular significance of groups of professions that are essential to the functioning of our society and the lives of each and every one of us. Each coin in the series features a polymer ring in a colour that is characteristic for the occupational group in question.
The coin consists of two different cupronickel alloys and a blue polymer ring. It weighs 9.8 g, has a diameter of 28.75 mm and will be made available both in mint condition and with a proof-like finish.
The mint condition coins will be brought into circulation at their face value (€10) by the Deutsche Bundesbank. The collector quality coins with a proof-like finish will be priced higher than their face value and can be ordered from Münze Deutschland (Germany’s official sales agency for collector coins).
The coin was designed by Berlin-based artist Lorenz Crössmann (picture side) and Patrick Niesel of Röthenbach an der Pegnitz (reverse).
The picture side features an eye-catching design reflecting both the human and technical aspects of the work of Germany’s Agency for Technical Relief (Technisches Hilfswerk, or THW), such as casualty search and rescue, flood protection and typical deployments involving heavy machinery. The personnel in action are drawn in a gender-neutral way, consistent with the THW’s commitment to diversity. Braced by the surrounding blue polymer ring, the portrayal of the many and varied tasks carried out by the agency comes together at the centre point of the coin, with the THW’s logo standing for the volunteers and full-time staffers that make up its workforce. The imagery, logo and typography combine to form a convincing and visually appealing composition.
The reverse, which is being used for all coins in the series, features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the year 2025, the twelve stars of Europe and the mint mark “A” (Berlin), “D” (Munich), “F” (Stuttgart), “G” (Karlsruhe) or “J” (Hamburg), depending on where the coin was minted.
The coin’s smooth edge is engraved with the inscription: “IM DIENST DER GESELLSCHAFT” (IN THE SERVICE OF SOCIETY)
