Coronavirus crisis sees drop in corporate insolvencies

Despite the massive shock triggered by the coronavirus pandemic and what were, at times, very stringent containment measures, the number of corporate insolvencies dropped substantially in 2020, the Bundesbank writes in its Monthly Report. This was due in part to the temporary suspension of the obligation to file for insolvency, which is subject to certain conditions. German enterprises’ sales fell far less significantly than they had done during the financial and economic crisis of 2009, the Bank’s economists explain.

Cash remains the most favoured means of payment

As in the past, German consumers prefer to pay for most of their purchases using cash. This is revealed by the Bundesbank's recent 2017 survey on "Payment behaviour in Germany". In terms of volume, however, the significance of cash has waned somewhat. As a share of the combined value of all payments made by private individuals, cash fell below the 50% mark for the first time.

TARGET2 verarbeitete 91 % des Gesamtwerts der über Euro-Großbetragszahlungssysteme getätigten Zahlungen. Aufgrund der SEPA-Migration sank das Transaktionsvolumen um 2,4 %. Mehr als 56 000 Kreditinstitute weltweit sind über das System erreichbar.

“According to a representative Bundesbank survey in 2020, the importance of cashless payment methods, especially cards, in everyday expenditures has been growing considerably,”
