On 1 January 1999, the euro was introduced as book money. Three years later, people in Germany and eleven other European countries got their hands on euro banknotes and coins for the first time. Today, twenty-five years later, the euro is legal tender in twenty countries and has become an indispensable part of Europeans’ everyday lives.

T2 What is T2?
In March 2023, T2 replaced TARGET2, the platform previously provided by Eurosystem central banks for settling high-value payments in real time. With the launch of the T2 service, participants now have two components at their disposal: one for central liquidity management (CLM) across all TARGET Services and one for traditional high-value payments (real-time gross settlement, RTGS).

ECB to apply new capital key from 1 January

This key determines what percentage share a national central bank must subscribe to the ECB’s capital of around €10.8 billion in total.
