Statistical data on the business activities of German enterprises are published on the basis of single-entity financial statements pursuant to the German Commercial Code (HGB) and on the basis of consolidated financial statements according to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

The G20 finance ministers and central bank governors are set to meet in Gandhinagar, India, from 17 to 18 July. Germany’s current account recorded a surplus of €8.9 billion in May 2023, down €13.4 billion on the previous month’s level. This was because invisible current transactions, which comprise services as well as primary and secondary income, switched to a deficit. The advantages or disadvantages firms experience as a result of their size, referred to in the economic literature as returns to scale, are of central importance in many economic models. Increasing returns to scale, whereby unit costs decrease as output volume increases, could explain productivity differences between Europe and the United States. We present fresh evidence on the returns to scale of European firms: most exhibit constant returns to scale, but a non-trivial share also show increasing returns to scale.

Upon invitation by the Research Centre, Benjamin M. Friedman, Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, held a lecture entitled “Central banks’ battle against inflation: Implications for monetary policy”. It was followed by a panel discussion featuring Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel, Fritzi Köhler-Geib (Chief Economist, KfW Group) and Jens Ulbrich (Director General Economics, Deutsche Bundesbank).
