The German government has decided to mint a €5 collectors’ coin “Temperate climate zone” with a green polymer ring, to be issued in September 2019. This coin is the third in the five-part “Climate zones of the Earth” series, with one coin to be issued per year from 2017 to 2021.

The obverse side of the coin was designed by artist Peter Lasch from Berlin. The reverse side design, which features on all of the coins in this series, was created by artist Stefanie Radtke from Leipzig.

The obverse side features a striking portrayal of the cultural landscapes that are particularly representative of the temperate zone, illustrated by the stylised farmland and forest edge. The European hare shown in the centre of the image is a common sight in the open landscapes of the temperate zone. The change of seasons typical of this type of climate is embodied by the autumnal oak branch. The silhouette depicts the mixed deciduous forests that characterise temperate landscapes.

The reverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the year 2018, the twelve stars of Europe and the mint mark “A” (Berlin), “D” (Munich), “F” (Stuttgart), “G” (Karlsruhe) or “J” (Hamburg), depending on where the coin was minted. 

Its smooth edge is embossed with the inscription “KLIMAZONEN DER ERDE”.

The €5 coin "Temperate zone" will consist of two different copper-nickel alloys and a translucent polymer ring. It will weigh 9 g and will be produced in both mint condition and with a proof-like finish.
