2015 – 25 years of German Unity
The German government decided on 4 June 2014 to issue a €2 commemorative coin “25 Jahre Deutsche Einheit“ (“25 Years of German Unity”). This coin commemorates German Reunification, the 25th anniversary of which will be celebrated next year. The mandate which the German constitution gave to the German people “to complete the unity and freedom of Germany” was fulfilled on 3 October 1990.
In this context, the Federal Finance Ministry has made the following declaration:
The national side (observe) was designed by the artist Bernd Wendhut, based in Bernkastel-Kues. The people occupying the foreground embody a new dawn and a new beginning; they are standing in front of the Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of German unity. Their declaration of will, “Wir sind ein Volk” (“We are one people”), represents the path leading to German Reunification.
The common European side of the coin (reverse) and the technical parameters correspond to those applying for “normal” €2 coins in circulation across the eurozone. The coin’s edge is embossed with the inscription: “EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT” (“UNITY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM”, a line from the German National Anthem) as well as with a stylised federal eagle.
The planned circulation will comprise 30 million units.
The coin will be legal tender throughout the eurozone.
