The consolidation process in the German banking sector continued in 2018, although the number of institutions did not fall as steeply as in the year before on account of new additions as banks operating in Europe and on the international stage prepare for Brexit. The total number of credit institutions in Germany has fallen by 40 to 1,783 institutions. Whereas, especially in the 1990s and the first half of the following decade, the number of credit institutions fell sharply, the consolidation process has been muted since then, especially since 2008; however, it has been undergoing a trend resurgence since 2013.
