The consolidation process in the German banking sector continued in 2017. The total number of credit institutions in Germany fell by 65 to 1,823 institutions. Whereas, especially in the 1990s and the first half of the following decade, the number of credit institutions fell sharply, the consolidation process has been muted since then, especially since 2008; however, it has been undergoing a trend resurgence since 2013.
