Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann welcomes the common stance agreed by the ECB Governing Council for sustainable and responsible investment principles for the euro-denominated non-monetary policy portfolios of Eurosystem central banks, emphasising that the Bundesbank is already working on incorporating these principles into its investment practices and disclosures.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time and affects the core tasks of a central bank. Against this backdrop, the Bundesbank is publishing its third climate-related disclosures. These include climate metrics on its non-monetary policy financial investments.

The Bundesbank’s economists have examined how climate action affects the value of stock corporations. The outcome under the assumptions made was that a large proportion of the corporations under review did not suffer major equity price losses as a consequence of their direct greenhouse gas emissions, even for a sharp rise in carbon prices. By contrast, shares in companies whose greenhouse gas emissions cause them high costs in relation to their dividends suffer large losses. Stock corporations whose business centres around fossil energy sources are hardest hit.

In Dortmund hat die Bundesbank die Grundsteinlegung für ihre neue Filiale feierlich begangen. Im Jahr 2019 wird der neue Standort die Wirtschaft im Ruhrgebiet mit Bargeld versorgen.

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has warned against ignoring the uncertainty surrounding future price developments. “We also need to keep an eye on the risks to the price outlook. In my view, the risks are tilted to the upside right now,” he said at the Bundesbank symposium “Banking supervision in dialogue”.
