2021 saw Germany’s current account surplus rise by €26½ billion to €265½ billion. The balance grew by ½ percentage point to 7½% of gross domestic product. The ratio thus more or less returned to its pre-pandemic level, after the short-lived decline in the previous year.

Germany’s current account recorded a surplus of €32.4 billion in March 2023, up €9.9 billion on the previous month’s level. This was chiefly attributable to a larger goods account surplus. In addition, the surplus in invisible current transactions, which comprise services as well as primary and secondary income, rose. 

The German current account recorded a surplus of €22.6 billion in February 2023, up €5.6 billion on the previous month’s level.

Die Leistungsbilanz wies in den vier Quartalen bis zum zweiten Quartal 2021 einen Überschuss in Höhe von 337 Mrd € (2,9 % des BIP im Euroraum) auf, verglichen mit einem Überschuss von 200 Mrd € (1,7 % des BIP) ein Jahr zuvor.

Germany’s current account posted a surplus of €16.2 billion in June 2022, meaning that the result was clearly positive again following the slight deficit of €0.4 billion in the previous month. This was primarily caused by the sharp shift in invisible current transactions, which comprise services as well as primary and secondary income. There was also a higher surplus in goods trading
