Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has spoken out in favour of making the rules on debt more binding. "It would be helpful for the rules of the Stability Pact to be simplified," he said in a speech delivered in Freiburg. Furthermore, Mr Weidmann added, a more rigorous interpretation of the rules could be achieved by giving responsibility for fiscal surveillance to an independent authority instead of the European Commission.

Zum zweiten Mal lud die Hauptverwaltung in Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Schleswig-Holstein gemeinsam mit Restaurants und anderen Anrainern der Deichstraße sowie Schiffern auf dem Nikolaifleet zum „Fest am Fleet“ und präsentierte der Öffentlichkeit auf anschauliche und unterhaltsame Art ihre Aufgabenfelder.

The results of the payments statistics for 2017 show that payments are becoming more digital and are increasingly made within Europe. More than 21 billion non-cash payments were made in Germany last year – around 3% more than the year before. These payments were executed on approximately 103 million current accounts. The average balance on these accounts thus rose by almost 12% to around €13,000.
