€20 collector coin “75th Berlinale”

€20 collector coin “75th Berlinale”

The German government has decided to mint a €20 collector coin marking the 75th anniversary of one of the world’s largest public film festivals, the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), to be issued 23 January 2025.

The coin pays tribute to the outstanding cultural significance the Berlinale has acquired over its 75-year history. The Berlinale provides a place for filmmakers and audiences from all over the world to meet and exchange ideas. Festival management has made its position clear that the event must be free of antisemitism and of discrimination and stigma of all forms.

The coin is made of sterling silver (alloy Ag 925). The image on the picture side is partially coloured. It weighs 18 g, has a diameter of 32.5 mm and will be made available both in mint condition and with a proof-like finish. The mint condition coins will be brought into circulation at their face value (€20). The issue price of the collector quality coins with a proof-like finish will be higher than their face value and is sold by the Münze Deutschland (Germany’s official sales agency for collector coins).

The coin was designed by Berlin artist Anna Steinmann.

The image on the picture side affords the onlooker a view of a cinema screen from within the audience. In the packed auditorium, a spotlight is directed at the Berlinale logo, illuminating the bear and the number 75. The inscription “BERLINALE” breaks out of the circle of light, with the letter A marking the transition between raised and engraved lettering. As a whole, the design stands out on account of its impressive depth and elegance.

The reverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “A” for the State Mint of Berlin, the year 2025, and the 12 stars of Europe. In addition, the words “SILBER 925” are minted on the coin.
The coin’s smooth edge is engraved with the inscription: “FESTIVAL IN BEWEGUNG FESTIVAL IN BEWEGUNG” (FESTIVAL IN MOTION)
