Frequently asked questions about the euro banknotes
Please read the following information before contacting the Bundesbank.
-
In the Eurosystem, a large number of technical experts work together in various committees and working groups to develop a new series. This also includes the permanent development of new security features. Accredited printers and suppliers of intermediate products are also involved in the development process.
-
Both series are in parallel circulation as legal tender. The date as of which the first series of euro banknotes will lose their status as legal tender will be announced far in advance; the banknotes of the first series can be exchanged at the Bundesbank for an unlimited period of time, however.
-
The further development of banknotes is a permanent task of the Eurosystem, although the focus is currently on the second banknote series.

The Deutsche Bundesbank and other Eurosystem central banks are issuing euro banknotes which bear the signature of Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB) since 1 November 2019.
All other characteristics of these banknotes correspond to those bearing the signatures of previous ECB Presidents, Willem F. Duisenberg, Jean-Claude Trichet or Mario Draghi. Euro banknotes with these four signatures circulate in parallel and are legal tender.
