A digital euro would be a digital form of central bank money, specifically the euro. It could be used by the general public in much the same way as cash, only in virtual form. Alongside cash, the Eurosystem would thus supply households with an additional form of central bank money that can be used quickly, easily and securely.

The data capture residents’ assets and liabilities vis-à-vis non-residents and vice versa. These figures are calculated over time based on balance of payments transactions and valuation changes.
In the second quarter of 2024, the German net international investment position (i.i.p.) increased by €114 billion to €3.2 trillion; that equates to 76% of gross domestic product (GDP). German claims on non-residents now stand at €13.1 trillion. This compares to German liabilities amounting to €9.9 trillion.

Germany’s gross external debt amounted to €6.3 trillion at the end of the second quarter 2024; relative to gross domestic product (GDP) it increased in the period under review.
Bundesbank’s external position stood at €811 billion at the end of October 2024, with claims from the TARGET2 payment system worth €1,064 billion making up around 72% of total assets. These are followed by international reserves, comprising gold and foreign exchange reserves, including the special drawing rights allocated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which account for a total of 18% of assets. At 83%, issuance of euro cash accounted for the bulk of liabilities. Deposits of non-euro area residents amount to 9% of foreign liabilities.

German enterprises constitute net debtors vis-à-vis non-residents: Standing at €1,770 billion at the end of September 2024, their liabilities arising from financial operations and trade credits, exceeded their corresponding assets of €1414 billion by €356 billion. Compared with the previous month, this is a change of €16 billion.
Financial operations with foreign non-banks are of particular importance here, while those with foreign banks play a secondary role. The first group accounts for 75% of claims and 86% of liabilities. At 22% and 16% respectively, the share of trade credits in these total figures remains comparatively small.
