Designing the architecture of the data warehouse with great flexibility IT employer

My name is Gaetan and I work as a data warehouse architect in the Directorate General IT at the Bundesbank. In my role, I create a bridge between our developers and the business units. I analyse clients’ technical needs and set out the requests in such a way that we can efficiently develop a solution. In this context, I work indirectly for the ECB, because many requests come from there. For example, we recently developed a report for identifying suspected money laundering cases based on payment transaction data.

I originally applied to the Bundesbank as a developer for the data warehouse. During the interview, I was asked whether I could also see myself in the role of architect. Even though it was a new field for me, I said yes, and have not once regretted my decision. I find the analytical work very enjoyable. I also received great training for this role. My team took the time to make sure I was as prepared as possible before meetings. That meant I was always fully up to speed on what the meetings were about and was quickly able to make my own contributions. My managers are always approachable and give their staff the support they need. All in all, I feel that I have been very warmly welcomed into my team. In my team, we have the option of starting work early and then finishing early, too. This was not something that I had come across before. But, if needed, everyone will stick around for longer as well. I really appreciate this level of flexibility.

Because of our desk-sharing system, I also have the opportunity to sit in other areas on our floor from time to time. Sometimes I pick a spot just for the view. When I look out from the 28th floor into the distance, it helps me to think a bit more freely and quickly find solutions to the challenges presented to me by our business units. I also work from home for around 50 % of my hours. I have been provided with all the right technical equipment for this, so it barely makes a difference where I work.
