Balance sheet items

Monthly balance sheet items

The monthly balance sheet statistics provide a comprehensive overview of the business of German banks (MFIs). Banks, with the status of a deposit-taking credit institution within the meaning of Regulation (EU) No 575/2013 on prudential requirements for credit institutions and investment firms, provide a monthly report of their balance sheet, which in further attachments is broken down in greater detail according to sectors and original maturities.

The monthly balance sheet statistics are a centrally important source of data for the consolidated balance sheet of the monetary financial institutions sector in Germany and thus for Germany's contribution to euro-area monetary aggregates.

To enable a more in-depth analysis of certain balance sheet items, information is obtained using the following surveys.

Borrowers statistics

The borrowers statistics report provides a more detailed breakdown of loans to domestic enterprises and households (including non-profit institutions serving households) outstanding at the end of the quarter. Enterprises and self-employed persons are shown by sector, using the economic sector classification of the Federal Statistical Office. In addition, the borrowers statistics include details on loan collateralisation and provide information on the terms and conditions of repayment for loans to households.

Regional banking statistics figures

On the basis of the quarterly collected data on the regional statistics, banking statistics figures (lending and deposit business with customers) are broken down by federal states (Länder). The regional categorisation is based on the domicile of the establishments (branches) and not on the domicile of the customers. At the bottom of the tables, there is a reference to the sources of the corresponding figures for Germany as a whole in the Monthly Report's Statistical Section and in the supplement on banking statistics.

Overall monetary surveys

(Consolidated balance sheet of the monetary financial institutions (MFIs)

The consolidated balance sheet shows the assets and liabilities of the monetary financial institutions which form the money-issuing sector of the euro area. First of all, separate sub-accounts are created for the Eurosystem and the “other MFIs” sector. The sub-account for the Eurosystem is also referred to as the consolidated financial statement of the Eurosystem. Data from the monthly balance sheet statistics of the Deutsche Bundesbank – as a monetary financial institution – are used for Germany’s contribution. Germany’s contribution to the sub-account of the other MFIs contains the balance sheet statistics reports submitted by credit institutions (including building and loan associations and money market funds).

Seasonally and calendar-adjusted time series are provided in addition to the unadjusted figures. Seasonal and calendar adjustment is carried out using the X-13 method in version 2.2.2. of JDemetra+.
